Stuck Pixels - a fact of life?

Well, I've got a week old Acer 2216WBD (second unit, after an exchange) - with a couple stuck pixels (green) that appear on certain colours - they come on and off, but you can sometimes see them at boot up, or on the right coloured background.

Now, my question: is this something you live with when you purchase an LCD? I mean, it seems like I've had bad panel after bad panel - but this made me wonder: do you ever get a perfect LCD? Am I just expecting a bit too much?

Appreciate the input!

Stuck pixels suck.

I've heard that lightly rubbing it with a q-tip can unstick it sometimes.

Also, there is a program called "UDPixel" or something like that, that might help

uhg. that sucks. i have one in my Chi Mei 221D also, and i have tried every method of voodoo i can find to get it out, with no luck. that said, check the manu and where you got it from, they may exchange it again. and no, you can get a perfect LCD. you've just been unlucky. :(

Well, I can definitely return it - I just wasn't sure if it was worth it, if this was something I was going to keep experiencing.

Well - back to best buy, hopefully 3rd time is a charm! /sigh

My laptop's 14 inch panel is perfect... no stuck or dead pixels. My Samsung 20 inch widescreen has just one stuck pixel... green. But it's on the taskbar so not very noticeable.

You might explain the problem you've been having to them and ask them if you could test the monitor there before taking it home.

I got my Viewsonic 22" a couple of months back with 2 stuck pixels dead center of the screen! It is only noticeable on a dark/black backround, so initially I did not notice it.

Unfortunately, by the time I did it was too late to return the item as unwanted, and neither the people I purchased it through, nor the people at Viewsonic wanted anything to do with me, saying 2 pixels is not enough to exchange it.

Have tried every method to un-stick them, but no luck.

Yes, it is possible to get perfect displays. But I would say the best way is not to buy them online, and to fire it up before leaving the store so you can check it over.

I have learned my lesson - now though, I just have to stick with it for a few years as I don't think people will buy it second hand for very much witht the stuck pixels.... unless someone can think of a way to help it fail so I can return it under warranty?

Sadly they still are but I've been lucky. I have never had an LCD that had stuck/dead pixels on arrival, although my Samsung 710T (Samsung) has developed two or three. ViewSonic VP930b (AU Optronics) has none still as far as I know. NEC 20WMGX2 (LG) also has none. All three were ordered from Newegg.

I must be lucky, I've had two LCDs, both viewsonics with no dead pixels. (Although I've yet to run dead pixel buddy or anything on my latest one).

I bought them both from costco with the full intention of returned them if they had any dead pixels.

If its a stuck pixel you can try to fix it with one of those flickering videos you run full screen... google it.

LCDs can be reliable, the only LCD that has failed on me is my iPod's... I own 4 LCDs (5 if you count the laptop's), the oldest is back from 2000 (its a 15" Apple Display) and it doesn't have any dead pixels... the others are 17" Apple Display, a Dell 1800FP and a Hyundai L90D+.

The 3 LCDs I've bought in my life (2 17"; 1 22", all ViewSonic) I've bought online....I've been so lucky I can't believe it: no dead pixels on any of those displays. :)

That's what I do. It sucks because it limits me to buying in stores, but I don't have much of a choice since I would flip out about a dead pixel.

This is unbelievable... 3rd Acer 2216, and YET ANOTHER PROBLEM. Again, on the LCDresource.com homepage, the entire left side of the page flickers (the panel flickers). It only seems to happen on this website, but NONE of my other monitors does this, and I have fiddled with all the settings.

This is the last Acer I buy - unbelievable!

How does one "help it fail" under warranty?

Isn't that like accidentally throwing someone off a cliff?

run over it with your car ...
--and your mother-in-law coincidently is carrying it :p
:Q

:D

it's your 'conscience', chrismr

--you can always use it for a 2nd monitor ;)
[obviously it didn't bother you *that much* or you'd have returned it]

and Arjunne, you might consider going to a B&M to buy a monitor ... that way [read their policy FIRST] you can exchange it till you are satisfied

even WalMart carries ACER now
:Q

that can't be good

I have one blue stuck pixel, which is only noticable on black backgrounds. This is on my 2007WFP, which I lucked out and received a S-IPS panel on my first exchange. I'm not going to risk the panel lottery again, so I can live with it. I'm running UDPixel as we speak to see if it can unstick it. If not, I'll live.

OK,

I've heard enough. I have two 20 inch Sony trinitron CRT monitors. I am on the backup because the first one finally went. If I can't fix it myself, I'll pay to have it repaired.

I am buying these from a B&M - best buy ;) They just don't want to try it out before I bring it home. Ah well, their loss.

With my 205BW I purchased yesterday, I had one stuck pixel on the left-bottom part of the screen that was always green. Originally I was just going to keep it, but I could tell it is going to bother me when gaming or doing something with a black background. I returned it to OfficeMax and Samsung is going to ship one direct to my house. Hopefully it will be perfect.

I've never had a problem with dead/stuck pixels before. My gateway laptop and LCD are perfect as far as I can tell.

My NEC 1740CX and laptop are perfect, however the one monitor that I wanted to be perfect, the Dell 2407WFP had to have one stuck red pixel. This was after returning the first one for having an entire vertical line stuck green, so I was in no mood to go into another return cycle, specially since returning for one pixel is regarded as "frivolous".

It may be frivolous, but I'd probably do it if it were my LCD :p
It's just one of those things that would bother me. My PSP has a stuck green pixel center right, and in some games it drives me nuts. Others, I can't see it. Depends on the background colors.

I bought a relatively cheap 19" 1280x1024 LCD monitor about two years ago and last year a Dell 2007wfp. Both luckily came without a single dead pixel. So yeah, if I got a monitor with a couple of dead pixels, I'd exchange it for another one.

Think of it this way, a monitor is one component of your PC that'll probably stick with for the longest. A keyboard, mouse, or even a case can have a blemish here or there but the monitor is what you're going to be staring at when you work on that PC. It's something that IMHO is definitely worth the trouble of exchanging.

Dont get too discouraged, I've owned 4 LCDs and only my first 17" LCD had one stuck pixel.

The first Westinghouse 32w6 had a stuck pixel and backlight bleed in the corners. Back to Best Buy it went. My second unit has all it's pixels and only a slight bleed in the top left corner, but nothing noticeable. One thing I do know. Even though I buy 99% of my electronics online, I ALWAYS buy my LCD panels at a place I can return it if need be. Dead or stuck pixels...and distracting backlight bleed are simply unacceptable...especially when you're paying $900 for a monitor!
