Stuck in Red Faction single-player campaign...

I picked this beauty up at CC yesterday for $4.99, and so far, its awesome.

I am currently at the end of the stage where I have to disable 5 of the power plant systems (pumps, generator, etc.). I have done all of the above, and I am at the submarine port.

I am supposed to lower the sub into the water and use it to leave. However, everytime I press the button in the control room, the sub starts moving and then explodes before its lowered into the water. I can try to swim out the channel, but I am quickly killed by an enemy sub.

I have read through all the walkthroughs and FAQs that I could find, but none mention the sub exploding. They all say to just press the button and get in the sub. However, most of the walkthroughs are for the PS2 version, but I doubt there would be any difference between the console and PC versions.

Anyone remember how to get around this part?

I am stuck at the point where I am supposed to lower the sub into the water and use it to leave. However, everytime I press the button, the sub starts moving and then explodes before its lowered into the water.
Is this the part that has metallic railings running across the roof and there's a small office with a locked door and a sniper rifle inside?

When you press the button is the sub above the water? And which button are you pressing, the one in the office or the one up the top by the sub?

I don't ever remember the sub exploding but I'm guessing the sub isn't above the water when you lower it. I think there are two buttons, one in the office and one up by the sub. I can't remember exactly but I think you have to press both, one to manouver the sub into position above the water and the other to drop it. You can reach the other switch by climbing on the metallic railing (yes, even sideways), and the office switch can be reached by blowing up the wall with any explosive device.

Also it might be worth applying the 1.2 patch in case this is a known bug that has been resolved. Check before you do so though, in case your old save games won't work (I think they will though).

Please let me know if you have any more problems and I'll do my best to help you. It really is a great game and you still have a lot of fun ahead of you. :)

Thanks BFG...

You are right about where I am stuck at in the game. I have found both buttons (the one above the sub and the one in the control room), but pressing either one does the same thing. The sub moves forward, and starts to lower into the water....then it explodes.

I'll go back tonight and trying using a combination of both buttons.

FYI, I applied the 1.2 patch before I started the campaign.

Overall, I think it's an excellent game. So far, the maps are sort of redundant, but the gameplay is fun as hell.

Oh what the heck, I better post here too in case the readers get confused. Feel free to continue the dicussion either here or in the PM Blue Weasel. ;)

The sub moves forward, and starts to lower into the water....then it explodes.
Is it directly above the water when it starts lowering? And how far above the water is it when it explodes? Does it touch it, or is it in mid-air?

It might pay to jump into the water and see if there is debris or other obstructions such as fish blocking the path of the sub.

Here's my post about it

I know, I posted there/here. :p

LOL...I just thought I'd transfer the PM for the rest of the community to see. :)

The sub moves horizontally out from the deck until its completely over the water. Then it starts lowering, but only moves maybe a foot or two before it explodes. It's still way above the surface of the channel when it blows up.

I haven't had a chance to try your earlier suggestions, but I just don't see how it would be possible to use a combination of the two buttons. They both do the same thing for me. The sub moves exactly the same and explodes at the same point regardless if I use the button in the control room, or use the one on the wench above the sub.

Again, I'll try it again tonight and post back here.

I did a search of the AT archives and found that the problem with the sub was a bug in the original, unpatched version of the game. People reported that once they patched the game, they were able to continue on with the campaign.

However, I patched the game to the latest (v1.20) before I even started playing.

Now what to do? :)

I had the exact same problem. Unfortunately I don't remember what I did to fix it, but I can tell you the patch did NOTHING for me. In fact, IIRC I never figured out exactly how I fixed it, it just happened...I went running around the level for awhile in frustration and when I came back it just worked.

Try killing all the enemies nearby...I mean clean the entire place out. I think that might do it. At least that was the only thing that I remember changing between when the sub kept exploding for me and when it worked fine. I dunno, maybe someone was sabotaging it somehow. *shrug*

Otherwise you could getting help at a Red Faction forum somewhere.

Well, at least its good to hear that I am not the only one that this has happed to....

I completely uninstalled RF last night and reinstalled. I did not patch the game and my saved games worked just fine with the original version of the game (v1.00). Unfortunately, the sub still blew up.

I then patched the game to v1.20, and again, no luck. :(

I would use a map cheat to simply move on to the next map, but it doesn't appear that this cheat was implemented into the game.

Is there a control room with a guy in it? (just to your left right after you go down the rams?) use your rocket launcher to blow a hole in the wall of the control room. Press the button in there. (I think this is where that blowing up sub is, Its been a wile sence i played RED FACTION)

Thenerdguy:

Did you read the entire thread?

You are correct about where I am stuck in the game. However, regardless if I press either the button in the control room or the button above the sub, it explodes....EVERY TIME. It's a known bug of the game, and patching to the latest version is supposed to fix it.

However, I patched to v1.20 before I started playing RF.

FYI, I uninstalled RF again and have restarted the single player campaign. Hopefully, the bug will not be there when I get to the submarine bay....

You can warp to any level by adding a -level [levelname] switch to the program shortcut so if you still have your old saved game you can simply restart the level you're on (-levelinfo will tell you this).

If all else fails you could try to kill the enemy subs with the rocket launcher. It might be possible if you lure them into a place where their homing torpedoes can't get to you.

BFG10K in regards to the rocket launcher advice you gave, IIRC the only weapon that works underwater is the handgun. There was a 1.3 patch floating around, it wasn't an official patch but one made by community to stop modding in multiplayer. I'm not sure if that would help your problem.

When I played the game i pushed the button above the sub and the sub blew up. I realoaded a quick save and then i pushed the button in the control room and it worked. So I reloaded a quick save and pushed the above the sub and it blew up. So far i have had more luck with the button in the control room. I did not have the game patched. So i dont know whats up with your game.

Update:
I don't have any luck with either button. As I stated above, I uninstalled RF and reinstalled (deleted all saved games). I patched the game to v1.20 before I restarted the single player campaign. I got back to the sub and it still explodes regardless of the method I use.

I have the game quick saved directly before the sub port, and reloading the game doesn't help either....

I have searched on Google and several other RF forums, but didn't turn anything up. I guess its time to dig a little deeper....

That's true but it might be possible to lure the sub to the surface.

Try reloading the sub level like I described. You'll lose all of your weapons except for the pistol but you can easily get those back.

I wouldn't feel bad about it since you're technically not cheating. I do this as well if I come across a game bug that I can't get around in any other way. :)
