Got into the alpha....a little buggy but I think it is pretty neat and entertaining. I like that fact that you play with other people which develops an in game market though its a lot of base building and not much attack.

Anyone else playing the alpha?

Hmm, this is the first I've heard of it. Base building and not much attack is what Stronghold is all about. I"m a big fan of Crusader, and have pumped days into figuring out just how to beat some of the maps.

from what I understand, the devs just repackaged stronghold 1 and changed the mechanics around for a stronger MP.

I really enjoyed Stronghold 1, but is the gameplay strong 5 years later and did they actually do any graphical touchups?

It works with higher resolutions so it does look better. Nothing worse then using a 22" 1680X1050(old monitor) and it being streched to fit. But it terms of graphics I would say its does look just like stronghold 1 I like how it looks compared to how stronghold 2...

The part I like about it is the team aspect. You are random placed in a village within a parish. Within that parish there are other people, you vote for someone to run the parish and do upgrades that benefit everyone within the parish. At some point in the game I can see things getting nuts and parishs attacking parishs and it being all out mayhem.

no reason to be a wise ass but for an alpha its not bad thats all i was trying to say.

I think he was just joking ;)

Also, found this teaser for the game on youtube. While on youtube, there is also an artwork/screenshot compilation for STRONGHOLD 3

and to quote a user from a different youtube video:
Paul at Firefly here. I can confirm this is a fake and nothing to do with Stronghold 3. The first look at Stronghold 3 will be around Gamescom in the middle of August.

interesting.

So I'm confused is it like a mmo?

if they redid the stronghold battlechest just to work better at a native 19*12, I'd buy it again.

so, watching the trailer, I'm kind of confused. Does the game let you control multiple villages/castles at the same time? Do you choose your location in the game? i.e. France/Britain, etc?

Can you save games so you can come back to them later? What if someone attacks you while you are offline?

The game lets you control multiple villages either through capture or buying them. Though you need a captain and that is not till level 12.

Not sure about the location part because I didn't choice it then again its the alpha. As of right now when I zoom fully out its only the map of Great Britain they have up.

The game is an mmo so its always going on. Everything has a tick from foods (apple, cheese, etc), building materials(wood, stone, etc), peasants, ale, luxury goods(vension, furniture) and weapons(bows, armor, etc) . So even when you aren't online your stock piles are growing. Yes you can be attacked while not being online. There are 3 screens, a world screen, a castle screen and a village screen. Villages screen is where you do all your production and building buildings. The castle screen lets you build walls, towers and other defensive buildings. This screen also lets you place troops on the walls and towers for your defense when you aren't online. The world screen show you whats going on in the world and see what is going on in your parish.

how do you attack others/defend your castle?

Well in the world screen you select the camp or village you want to attack. You can scout it first to see how their defenses are and if your are going get it handed to you. When you select attack it opens the castle screen to the place where you want to attack you deploy your troops around it then launch and it takes a certain time for them to get there.

Just like when you defend all you can do is setup your troops you have no direct control over them. Depending on how many troops, types of troops, trained skills and defensive buildings can effect the battle.

Interesting. it's kinda a turn off to hear that you can't control your troops to defend your castle, a competent player should be able to win in 15 minutes at most.

However, Stronghold 3 has been announced, and rumor has it that Crusaders 2 will be announced around Stronghold 3's release as well.

Ah it is the kind of format you need for an mmo that has people in different time zone or different schedules wont get owned when they arent online. Plus I dont know about you but for the most part in stronghold you would just build defence(walls and towers) and then put archers up all over the place. I would prefer to control attacking myself but it just wouldnt be fair if the other person wasnt online to defend. Also you can set your troops in different formations(line, box, bigger box, single unit) and also set their stance(offensively or defensively) only when defending though. For example if I put my peasants on offensive they will come from out of my walls and defences and start attacking right away. If I put them on defensive they only attack when an enemy comes in range.

did a search for something about stronghold and one of the links was about this being in open beta, so I've got a couple hours in it now. looks interesting but not sure given how powerful some around you seem how you keep from just getting wiped out.

I really like Stronghold, but I just don't know about this MMO stuff. I mean, I'd rather just build by myself then have some 12 year old with a swastika shaped castle attacking me every 15 minutes.

I stopped playing it months ago dont get me wrong I think its interesting and its nice if you do not have a lot of time to play. But I am really holding out for stronghold 3 if it ever comes out.

given how slow it is, i tried to reinstall stronghold 2, but damn thing won't install. after you enter directory and all that stuff, it gets to the blue loading bar and just sits there forever with no progress.
