Hi,

I am looking for a strong but quiet heatsink/fan combo for my Pentium III socket 370. I have heard of the Thermaltake Volcano 7 that has the variable speed fan, but I don't know how good that works, and I am also looking for other options.

I guess I am aiming for something in the lower 30 dba range. I have a Golden Orb that runs at 26 dba, but the fan only spins at 4600 rpms, and it is really weak when it comes to cooling.

Any suggestions on a fan/heatsink that is both strong and quiet would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

What speed processor are you looking to cool? The stock HS/Fans are very good and quiet. The GORB is noisy and cools poorly. Bad combo.

The gorb is actually a very good cooler for a Cumine :D Try it out, and see how it works. My friend had a Slot 1 Gorb on his 650 and it keeps his temps around 35-45 degrees, and my Alpha only keeps my 750 at 900 at around 25-35 degrees.

Oh, I tried it. I tried the GORB, a stock Intel and a Taisol CEK734092 on my PIII 1 G @ 1125. The Taisol cooled slightly better than the stock Intel and also was slightly noisier. The GORB ran much hotter and was much louder than the other two. I didn't see any benefit at all with the GORB. I run the stock Intel since it is the quietest.

Really? I'm suprised! Of course..my friends was a Slot 1 Gorb (large heat plate there, since it covers the whole SLot 1) so that might be why. Hmm.... For a good quiet heatsink, you should probably look for an Alpha Pal 6035 or a Pep66T and stick a quiet fan on it. What kind of temps are you hitting right now?

Never tried the slot1 GORB. Dont get me wrong, a GORB will work, but it is FAR from the best solution. Search the forum and you will see most people wont touch them. You can easily get a better cooling solution that makes less noise.

<< I am looking for a strong but quiet heatsink/fan combo for my Pentium III socket 370. >>

The Dynatron DC1206BM-P may be your best bid.

Look at the review here.

Thermal Integration's TI-V77L is another of the best HSF for socket 370 or Athlon, high performance with low noise.

You can find more information and a number of review at Cooler Star site.

Thermal Integration makes three version of this cooler, with different speed fans. Make sure that you get the one with the high speed YS Tech fan:

FD1270157B-1F

This is a new 70mm, 11-blade, 5000 rpm design from YS Tech which moves almost as much air as the infamous YS Tech 6800 rpm fan (36.5 vs. 40 CFM) at a fraction of the noise.

Most of the review rate its performance (with the YS fan) to be equal to the Thermalright with the 6800 rpm fan, but at much lower noise.

I use the Alpha myself, which is strong and quiet, but considered it a little overpriced compared to the options above. However, I have seen the used Alpha on sale here and at Ebay for pennies.

Hard to go wrong with an Alpha 6035 and your choice of fan from a variety of vendors. Sunons in the 23-26cfm range give really good results without a lot of noise. Often overlooked in the rush to have something NEW! they'll still hold their own(and then some) on socket 370 processors.

They're also not too bad about getting clogged with dust, cathair, etc.- Some of the thin fin/narrow spacing copper coolers obviously won't be so forgiving in that regard.
