Hello

I was playing a game in steam when the screen just flashed and weird things appeared on the screen (I thought the GPU was toast). I recently installed a driver update from AMD and I got an error about it in windows (program not installed properly), but it seemed to be working ok so I left it like that. I have a Radeon HD 6870 BTW.

Back to the problem: Things start to appear on the monitor beginning from boot-up and up to the log in screen. I put in my password and I get a blue screen, not BSOD but one with vertical stripes. After that I have to restart or go into safe mode to use the computer (stripes still visible in safe mode). I removed the driver using AMD driver uninstall tool (because the normal catalyst uninstall was not working). I installed and older driver but screen stripes are still there. However, without any driver I was able to log in to windows normally without the BSOD with stripes.

I have some pictures here:

Now my question is: has anyone experienced something like this before or have any idea what is causing this? is it the GPU or something else perhaps?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. :)

GPU is probably dying. Same thing happened on all my cards. I'd start hoping you don't have an ASUS card around Indiana.

I was hoping the GPU wasn't dead, but I would consider your point. I might be looking for a replacement. Thanks!
Any other suggestions?

Ohh man....thanks a lot everyone. I guess it was time for an upgrade anyway. What would be a good card to go with an AMD FX6? I don't want to overpower rhe CPU.

It depends on your budget: maybe R9 270 2GB or R9 280 3GB.

I got the replacement, a GTX 760 2GB. I should be good for another 2 years with this one. Thanks everyone for your time! :)
