My throat was hurting for the better part of the weekend, and Monday I was diagnosed with strep throat, fever of 100.5.

I've been on antibiotics since then, but 40 hours later I actually feel worse.

Its very painful to swallow, and because of my throat, my mouth has been producing more saliva. I haven't had anything solid to eat since Sunday night because I'd probably choke on it, and it's a struggle just to drink half a glass of water.

Earlier today my fever reached 102.7... but hours later it was at 98.7 .... Still feel like hell.

Here is a picture of my throat, but it's kinda disgusting.
I don't even know what that IS.

Update?: Throat looks the same. I've been on the antibotics for about 3 full days. The fever has broken and that is gone, but after a return trip to the doctor yesterday, she was surprised to see what had happened to my throat in only a couple of days.

A throat culture has come back negative for strep, and a blood test showed that something or other counted in the blood has not dropped at all, typical with strep. Which means that either the strep is as good as over, or worse off... it's not strep, it's mono.

So that sucks hard.

Tuesday was birthday and I spent the entire day sitting around miserable. This is the first time I've EVER called off work for an illness and I'm going on my fourth day of that.

The worst part is that I still can't eat. I did manage to work a can of campbell's tomato soup down the other night... only took about 2 hours though :(

The doctor DID prescribe some hydrocodine to help me get some sleep, and that works great for a whole 4 or 5 hours before I stop floating, but at least I'm not sleeping for 30 minutes, then laying there feeling like hell for an hour... sleeping another 30 and so on.

ouch, I used to get strep all the time, then I would get tonsilitis(spl?), but since i've had my tonsils removed, 10 years ago now I guess it's been, I think i've had strep once..or twice maybe. but strep sucks sooo bad, I feel your pain. Hope you get better soon

ouch that is strep.. a bad case too.... i just had my tonsils removed so i know how that feels... i am in pain.

Let me suggest sucking on ice, it will help 'numb' the area so you can swallow a bit. I am sucking on ice and popsicles.

edit: gargling is another option.. warm water with salt.. and go for it.. you will feel a lot better.. i recommend this over ice...

but you can put an ice pack on teh outside if you want.. to numb the area - but only for a few seconds at a time, you dont want to freeze teh area cold.

Try gargling with some warm salt water. Let it get to the back of your throat, as deep as possible (get your mind out of the gutter you sick bastards). It may help loosen up that crap that is lodged onto the back of your throat. It won't help your illness per say, but it may help your throat feel better.

Honey can help the throat feel better for a short time span... enough to help you get some food down. You need to keep eating so your body can get the resources it needs to keep fighting the infection. Also, try and drink or eat some fruits. You need the vitamins in the fruits.

I have THE most amazing sore throat atm (GP said it looked like someone had wirebrushed it), but no other symptoms :Q
Like the OP, it kills to swallow, and i can't sleep much because of that :| ON penicillin & massive doses of panadeine which makes it almost bearable i guess...so i sympathise with you OP.

... it IS my throat. I'm pretty sure it's swelled from the over abundance of bacteria caught by the tonsils/lymphnodes.

you can remove the pus pockets. My wife before she had her tonsils taken out would get strep throat all the time. She would stick a finger in and remove the buildup. It made her throat feel better. You should try it.
