I was talking to my friend and he told me that when @ gym, I should always do the weight training first then cardio. What's the reason for this?

I"ve been trying to improve my strength as well as my body weigh. What's the proper way to do this? What's a good diet plan?

Thx

weight training then cardio...maybe to work your muscles and then keep them going to increase endurance? have no idea...

If you do cardio before weights, you're going to end up out of energy when you go to do weights.

well ive been trying to do the same. im not sure about the strength/cardio question, but i have a few pointers for u to help u. (helped me lose ~20 lbs in 2 months :))

-dont go into any diet plan (aka atkins, low fat high card, etc) they dont work, trust me

-get as much excersize as possible, even if its only 10 minutes, its better than nothing

-losing weight will have to be a lifestyle change, not something u do for a year and then go back to ur old ways

-dont go to the gym every day, muscles grow at rest and u need some time for them to build

-be prepared to fail a few times

-u must b very determined to do this, try to aviod the candy/ice cream aisles at the store

-eat lots of protein!!!!

-have fun

Not the best suggestion.

Do cardio first then weight training:
muscles are warmed up after cardio = less likelihood of muscle spasm or injury

Everyone is pretty much making stuff up here. Search google and you'll find umpteen articles advocating each position. I say do whatever works best for you.

Presumably the OP would engage in at least minimal stretching before weight training. Provided you don't start lifting without warming up at all, I don't see this being an issue.

I don't make stuff up and I don't depend on google when I can depend on my education in human anatomy and physiology.

Google this: Baylor College of Medicine.

Basically has to do with your glycogen levels. If you do cardio you will depelete your "energy reserves" and if you follow that with weights you will be probably strart getting into the lactic acid cycle stuff (the burning sensation). It would be akin to working out on an empty stomach, which is just asking for trouble. Running on an empty stomach is acceptable, doing strength training on an empty stomach is bad.

Most people do something like a ten minute cardio warm up, 45 minutes of strength training followed by 30/45/whatever minutes on cardio.

Well I'd admit ownage here, but in my own defense this question gets asked a lot and most of the time people are just making things up. And while I don't doubt your education , I'd guess that not all medical experts agree with your opinion. Feel free to disagree.

ok, thx for the suggestions. I"ve been going to the gym for the past month. 5 days/ week. I have always done cardio (biking) first for 30 mins then weight training. But after hearing many people's suggestions, I think I will cut down the cardio time at the begining.

Um, that's why you warm up your muscles by doing warmup sets, or get your heartrate and blood pumping by doing a quick 5 minute session of cardio. No bodybuilder or weight lifter would recommend cardio first, then weight training. (I'd really like to see this muscle adding weight regiment of yours that would work after 30-60 minutes on a treadmill or a stairclimber when your glycogen stores are empty.)

i agree with ddviper that this will be a life style change. I used to be 265 and now i'm 215. Listen to ddviper, and also, don't do cardio and weights on the same day. alternate between them. To best get results from cardio, you have to "switch it up". Say Tuesdays you do a timed run where you run as fast as you can for 1 mile, eventually you'd want to build up to 3 miles. Thursdays you'd want to do interval, where you so a jog for 30 second, run for 1 min 30 sec and sprint for 1 min, then run for 1 min 30 sec and jog for 30 sec, and so on, until roughly 30 mins is up. Then say on saturday you can try and do a slow pace run, 6-7 miles? Just build up to that point.

I'm sure you know about weights and breaking down your muscle group so i won't get into that.

oh and if its weight you're trying to loose, when you do weights make sure you're sweating and that you keep your heart rate up. Don't rest for more than 30 seconds (this will cause you to do lighter weights though). 1 min is usually recommended, but to keep your heart rate up and to keep you sweating do 30 seconds. Also push yourself!.

i think the ideal workout routine
is
stretch
5 minutes of cardio warmup (slow run)
weights
20+ minutes of cardio (intense)
stretch
then eat something healthy within 30 minutes

that way u build muscle and lose fat at the same time

do swimming or something, that gets your cardio up good. your fighting more resistance of the water, plus your breathing less. helps you body work much more efficietntly

I have always always been told to do cardio BEFORE weight training. Then again, I tend to focus more on the cardio aspect and the weight training is meant to supplement the cardio, not the other way around.

Yeah....I did cardio once before lifting weights and things got ugly. I wasn't able to do as many reps cause my muscles were already tired. It can actually be dangerous if you don't have a spotter.

Furthermore, I used to play basketball some days after benching. Those were tough games....I could barely throw the ball. :p
