Developer Bomber Games started working on a game called Streets of Rage Remake in 2003, and only this week released the final version of the freeware PC game. We can only assume that Sega didn't take eight years working on the original Streets of Rage, so where did the time go in this project?

Well, it's less a "remake" and more of a hugely expanded, mostly new game. Remake, built entirely using new code, contains 103 stages, and all the playable characters from Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 (with new abilities), along with new characters. New enemies based on the Game Gear games and cover illustrations have been added to the lineup of punching bags. Boss Rush, Volleyball, AI partner mode, and other extras are also thrown in. Oh, and there's a level editor.

Check out a video of an earlier version after the break, and download the Windows game here before Sega's lawyers hit the Streets.

Very cool, I loved SoR on Genesis. Yes this was a console game but this is a Freeware remake so pick it up. I haven't played it yet but for free, I'm not going to complain.

My brother and I spent countless hours on the SoR series as kids.

EDIT: So had to try it out, not bad really, controller works no problems, level selction is odd to me, but hey, more content.

This is basically a rom hack, yet it takes up 200+MB? Wow, I wonder what takes up all that space!

Good job on reading post.

I spent some time playing this last night. They are really forgiving, and just hand out those extra lives. After an hour I was super bored and just had to quit. They really needed to add a save feature.
It would have been nice if they modernized the graphics a bit.

I read that, but the final effect is that they created a game that is basically a rom hack. Added some new sprites and levels, doesn't look like they went beyond the capabilities of the original games/system.

Yes, I played this some when I was younger. Was on Genesis right ? I was more of a SNES guy though. Double Dragon (8-bit) ftw. :)

I did like Final Fight though. But with that being said, downloading now. Thx

I had Streets of Rage 2 but never beat the game. Maybe I'll pick this up tonight and mess around with it.

Oh man streets of rage was amazing, i killed my first teammate on that game, battered my friend with a metal pole because we were fighting about who gets the metal pole

Only ever beat the 2nd one though, 1 and 3 were tough, especially 3! Those bar prostitutes beat my ass every single time. I read somewhere they made the american/european version of 3 umpteen times tougher than the japanese one just for shits and giggles.
