Anyone here from the valley? I grew up there and I just saw a news clip relating to the new movie that's coming out this weekend. I thought it was funny that they are pointing out the San Fernando Valley as where the street racing occurs. They had this fool witha 4 banger Benz on and he races that POS? Hahahaha.....

So anyways, who here has been involved in a street race either spectator or driver?

We used to race on Ventura and also up in Simi or in Chastworth area. Friends older bro got busted for 'exhibition of speed' up in Simi. Took $3K to bail him out of that one! I'll admit my friends and I have done really stupid things back in HS. We raced a 67 stang with my friends 95 5.0. Both were modded. But we did this on the freeway hit about 140. Almost crashed. But seriously, that was some stupid sh!t.

Well, to make this short, the news was saying how some of the LAPD were actually scared of the impact of what this movie will do to teenagers. I know this has been discussed slightly before but this is to serve as a deterrent to this sort of behavior.

Had two friends seriously injured from street racing. One smacked into a parked car and the other ran a red. Couldn't stop in time. They didn't die but were reall f-ed up. You may not be so lucky. So please, if you go watch this movie, I know it's gonna be a rush but please don't go thinking your little POS is gonan handle like these professionally modded cars.

Thanks for listening, and be safe.

Seeing you are from Irvine I wonder if you remember OCIR(Orange County International Raceway)???
It was a cool place you can race legally for sumthing like 5$
Wednesday nights was run what you brung and open exhaust was allowed.
Friday nites was street race style, closed exhaust, christmas tree just flashed green and the elapsed times were not announced over the loudspeaker. All of the cars you would see were american made V-8s and a few motorcycles. What a great place to have fun,too bad the land became valuable.

I have seen idiots race their cars on glenoaks near sylmar. Any deserted stretch is used for racing.

I normally dont race but if I had to race the engine and burn rubber I wouldnt mind.

I havent sat down and watched one but I have seen these idiots zoom past me.

i think street races are stupid. I think even with skilled drivers that know what they're doing it's still illegal (i don't care about it that much but it's not good). Plus occasionally you'll get the usual teen crowd with their little cars (sometimes), and the crowd of ricers (sometimes) it isn't that great. The track is where it's at. Auto-x or 1/4mi.

There is a difference between rice and performance :| Don't be ignorant, there are some DAMN fast 4bangers out there. Take a MR2 Turbo. LOW 14s in the 1/4 stock. Thats good enough to keep up with any LT1. Modified it can keep up with LS1s.

street races are ok to watch... but they are some of the stupidest things in the world to compete in...

granted, if youve got a fast car, you can make some bucks, but you have to get into the underground scene, and they are only in the big cities...

i think that closed circuits should be more accessible to thrill seeking people and their cars...

I'd love a place where you can just slap $5-10 down, barrel down a track, and get a time slip. There's been alot of times that I've wondered about a car's quarter mile time but never had a way to test it. That'd also eliminate alot of bench racing (I bet Kirsten Powell always won those against her classmates). One race I'd like to do is my '91 GP vs. my dad's dodge cummins. That thing can kick if it gets on the boost, but the street would never be a good place to try that little number out.

I used to love to street race, but not rice burners.

My last car ran a high 11 at 6,000 feet, off the bottle :)

Having a track around wont stop street racing, street racing is
more exciting.

The police didn't even bother us until this chick got killed.
The street that we used to race on (when I was in high school)
was not very safe it ended with another street and a 3 foot wall
to keep traffic from ending up in a mesa. This chick was racing
daddy's brand new 5.0 GT and she never hit the brakes :(
There are still peices of that car scattered all over that mesa.
After that the street racing scene here pretty much dried up until
recently.
Street racing is very dangerous.

Yea, just don't start bragging about S2000's rolling start or 60-80mph time. VTEC is nice, but give me a small block V8 and some 8" wide rubbers.

As they say, "there's no replacement for displacement."

Besides, S2000 is f*cking $32000 MSRP. For that, you should be comparing S2000 with a Cobra. Handling? That goes to the Cobra too; check out car rags...

But it is silly, you can't compare a V8 with a I4.

Anyway, back to the thread's point: Don't be thinking your some kinda racer in your Civics with laughing gas. No love lost if you die racing but you'll take someone out along with you.

"You are not as good a driver as you think you are and your car doesn't handle as good as you think it does." -unknown race car driver.
