Street Names

Encryptic

I've wondered about this a few times and happened to think about it yesterday: What is the difference between various street names:

Boulevard
Avenue
Road
Court
Drive
Lane

...and so on. Are these simply different names for the same thing, or are they assigned to streets based on the location, number of lanes, etc.? I've never seen a "boulevard" or "avenue" in a suburban neighborhood, that I can recall, although I do see "lane", "court" (seems to refer to a cul-de-sac most of the time), "drive", etc. a lot.

Well, Crescent should be obvious. I live in what I guess would be the "burbs" and there's an Avenue just around the corner.

Let's see ... road, street, ave, ave, street, crescent ...

Probably cultural or locational. The yuppies want fancy names, the normal people know it doesn't matter. 😀

Well, Court should be pretty obvious...it's for cul-de-sacs.

To me, Boulevard is like a tree-lined, divided 4-lane road...maybe in an upscale area.

Avenue is much the same but maybe more in a business district.

Drive...well...residential

Street...more for a downtown or business district.

Lane...small, maybe one-laner, out in the country.

Road...longer roadway...maybe between towns.
