Streaming WMA

For clarification, I can stream them PERFECTLY over the 802.11b portion of my network.

My problem stem from the fact that I want to stream my music over the internet, however, I do not want to convert 20GB+ of music encoded in wma losses.

Becasue my Cable Internet's 24KB/s max upload, I obviously cannot stram lossless.


My question is this, can windows media server convert my music to a lower bitrate on-deman without doing it beforehand?


For the moment I am just using FTP, but transfering takes quite a bit, with no audio while I am waiting.

sorry not much help but from a pratical side, streaming any LOSSLESS is unpractical. WMA was made to sound good at small bitrates specifically for streaming, so it can compete with RM and small mp3. Lossless WMA was created for those NICHE users who use WMP and know what lossless means.

i stream lossless WMA from my computer to my laptop through 802.11b and it works fine.

but it's like 1mbit/sec, way over your 256kbit/sec

Unpractical to stream any lossless? Don't tell my bedroom computer w/an 802.11b card in it. It's been streaming .ape for months without a hitch. The only thing I've had problems streaming is DTS, but that may just be PowerDVD's problem.

Goosemaster, I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish. Your server with all your music is offline and...

you're talking about home network. im referring to over the internet. he mentioned his server is 24kb/s .. that doesn't sound like home network speeds.

sorry, never used Windows Media Server. It might be able to. check out hydrogenaudio.org.

if not, you can always encode those files overnight and be ready. but that sounds like a last ditch effort. good luck.
