I just got a 40gb PS3 on Friday and I just heard about the ability to stream video from a networked PC to the PS3 and I'm wondering how this is done. The PS3 is updated with the latest updates and connected to my wireless network. The computer i'm trying to stream video from is running Vista Home Premium. Any information on how to enable this would be appreciated. I have a good understanding about computers but i'm still leaning on the PS3, thanks.

You need a program to do it. WMP11 does this. Open up WMP11 and click on Library then click on Media Sharing. Turn it on. Go into media sharing settings and make sure the "allow new PCs/Devices to connect to this computer automatically" is checked. Also make sure your network settings is set to a "private" network. Now go to PS3 -- make sure you have media server enabled in the settings. Scan for media servers and it should pop up. You don't have to leave WMP11 open and you can close it.

Also only files that you have on the WMP11 library will show up -- so formats that WMP11 don't support won't show up on your server.

Also if you are doing this wirelessly you need alteast an 802.11g router for videos.

There is another program -- tversity that is popular that also does media serving.

Sadaiyappan covered most of it. Follow those directions and you should be good.

One note - G isn't required. I have an 802.11b router that still sends stuff over just fine. The PS3 is pretty good with streaming. My 360 on the other hand was horrible and just died trying to pull stuff.

Thanks guys. My router is up to par but i'm having some problems with video and audio. I can't get any audio to show up on the PS3, all my audio files are in MP3 format. I have some video that shows up and some that doesn't. I have a Codec pack installed on my system so it allows WMP11 to play more formats so I know that some video would show up and some wouldn't but when I try to convert the video to the formats that so show up they still don't show on the PS3.

Well I was able to get the video working but the audio MP3 files I can't get to work. I'm assuming the PS3 only recognizes WMA file? Pictures work fine a well.

You can also look into Tversity, it is a free program that does not limit you to what media player has in its library, and can even transcode files to something PS3 compatible while streaming.

Thanks, i'll take a look at it. One other question, I read about people renaming DVD .VOB files to .MPEG files and it working. I just gave it a try and had a green flickering screen with the video file I was trying to watch. Is there a trick to this or is it by luck?

How does TVersity work?

It's a pretty cool app but I don't want to be sharing media with all of my neighbors... can only people on my network see it or is it broadcasting to anyone who's looking?

On a side note, I've had nothing but trouble with it's conversion tool

It should only work over your network. Now if you are on like a University network then anyone looking for a DLNA host will pick it up. I dunno if there's any password protection or anything like iTunes gives.

I have been using Tversity, its really easy and works very well. What is cool about that is that it can transcode types of files that the ps3 can't natively play.
