Streaming Video Hardware

I have a question for the experienced Web-Streamers out there :

I would like to stream 3 to 4 minute clips over the internet, where the traffic capacity will be about max 50 users at a time.

What is in your opinion the best Software and Hardware configuration to use?

Im thinking somewhere in the lines of a lot of memory, 2 GB, fast SATA harddrives (Raptor), a dual AMD machine. To produce the video, I am not quite sure what I should get because I don't know the best solution out there. A lot of the material is available on VHS tapes, which are to be digitalized.
For software, quicktime and windows media would probably be the best because the clients aren't a spyware and performance decreaser (ehrm, real, ehrm).

I appreciate ANY suggestions...

THX
