Streaming to DVD-R?

I've come kicking and screaming into the 20th century. Have Directv, PS3 and Chromcast. Would like to cut out Directv and just stream what I want. Also, as allowed by the Supreme Court, I often timeshift movies by copying to DVD-R for my own use only. I also have an output from my DVD recorder to a SDTV in another room. I've tried a converter box that takes HDMI to composite video and audio and run that into my DVD recorder. I get sound but no picture. Is this a handshake issue? A copy protection scheme? Sunspots? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Converter boxes often don't support HDCP, which I suspect is your problem. I can't use my DirectTV receivers with my computer monitor for that reason. Mine are still old enough to have component output, so I use that with HDPVRs.
