Streaming media to xbox 360

Alright, I have been trying for a while to stream media from my computer's external hard drive to an xbox 360 so I could watch videos and stuff on the T.V. however all attempts have failed. I have tried multiple methods given on xbox.com (one, two, and another one that I cannot find right now in which you plug an ethernet cable directly from the computer into the xbox). I have tried using both the zune software and WMP 11 but the xbox doesnt seem to show up in either of them. The things I have are a computer (running windows tablet pc edition) + external hard drive, router, and xbox 360. Thanks for the help.
 
If you want to record TV ala Tivo, MCE is fine (although Beyond TV is much better IMO -- less restrictive and more extensible), but if you just want to stream video get tversity. TVersity even lets you stream DivX/Xvid, which MCE does not.
