Streaming media server requirements?

I'm looking at setting up a home media server for streaming music, photos, and videos to my media center and other household computers. Right now I have a 1.3ghz Celeron with 256mb ram and Windows XP Home. I've been looking at a more compact solution, the Mini-ITX series of motherboard/processor combos. I'll just be running Linux with simple file sharing turned on, that's it. Is 500mhz too slow? 800mhz? It's running fine with 256mb ram right now, so I'm not too worried about that.
