hello folks,

I am looking for what I believe would be a "media server" i can host on my PC, that can stream to either my phone or tablet.

I will be streaming either from work or on the road, I will not be streaming over my LAN which is why I am having to pursue this, bandwidth constraints basically. So the solution would have to utilize some compression or other bandwidth saving techniques.

Basically my scenario is this:

I have am running OpenVPN @ home. With files shared on my server.

I have OpenVPN on my samsung galaxy, and can VPN back to my house.

Right now I can use basic file browsers to watch movies/tv shows/ or listen to music on my phone, from my home PC.

I would like a more efficient way of doing this than over SMB/CIFS. So are the more "streaming friendly" options that I could pursue?

Thanks !

Plex will work, but I've never been a big fan of the interface myself.

Are you using an iPhone or an Android device?

Get Plex. It just works. I use it to stream all media to my phone over 3G/4G.

/bought the app when it was $2 for both android/iOS for the back to school sale

Plex for streaming off home network.
XBMC for streaming at home.

Yeah, Plex is worth the $ if you're using Android. I just don't like how it categorizes things, personally, and it's never done a really great job for me in keeping updated withy content.

I prefer AirVideo, as it doesn't try to categorize my videos. I just point it to a folder and then it says "Here's your videos". Unfortunately, it's iOS only.
