streaming divx/xvid over wireless network

right now i'm running a Dell Latitude [P3 450, 128RAM] and a 802.11B network, however, I just upgraded to a G router but i have yet to get the G wireless card yet (which costs the same as the router, go figure). Anyways, I can barely play divx movies over the network (mpegs are fine). They work but after like 2 min of buffer time at the beginning and during some parts with heavy action it just slows down to a crawl. is it my RAM or the network which is the bottleneck? i'm upgrading both within a week, hopefully that will help.

If we state that DIVX is really, really good compression, and MPEG is 'only' "good" compression (I'm assuming you mean MPEG-2, the actual compression standard) then it bears to reason the issue is your CPU, not the wireless network, since divx should be considerably smaller than MPEG-2 files.

What happens to your CPU usage during this time?

What happens to your network utilization during that time?

Answer those two questions, and you can get the solution yourself. 🙂
 
Even my old $20 POS 802.1b Uniden combo transmitted Divx, and flawlessly at that. Basically any available option should work as long as you don't have signal problems due to thick/brick walls etc.

MPEG2 @1.5-8Mbps will require 802.11g
 
doubt its your ram. vid decode is processor/vid card intensive. divx is harder to decompress then mpeg. data rates for either can vary. some mpeg are low as divx... i don't know what your playing. if your a warez monkey like ithink u are, then your playing nothing but vcd and weenie data rate divx. 1 cd or 2 cd an hour? easily handled by b. streaming dvd content.. thats harder. g cards are on sale all the time.
 
how intensive depends on resolution and bitrate. the higher the more intensive. depends what settings are used for compression too. some more advanced features of divx take more to decode.

won't that make everything else in windows look low res?

on that lappy it will be not be severely noticable.
