Stream a movie file...what format?

I want to compress some raw DV into a file for streaming or playing through the Internet. What format should I use that will play default on a Mac or PC? My assumption is that they have nothing besides a base install, so Mac users would have Quicktime and Windows users would have Windows Media Player. I know .mpg will work, but it's file size is going to be too large. Any ideas?

Quicktime would be my choice since it works with both Mac and Windows
