One of my roommates wants to get a PC game for my other roommate for Christmas -- he can't really do fast-paced stuff without feeling rather ill, so FPS / etc is out. He's playing Civ 4 now - already let him take Supreme Commander and Medieval 2: Total War, so those are out. She's entirely clueless on what to get, so I told her I'd check it out for her. ~$30 budget.

I'm thinking AoE 3, Dawn of Discovery..? Any ideas? He has a Core i5 750 / 4Gb / 4670.

I don't really care for real time stategies, but I do like turn based ones. Probably the 2 I played most was, hrm, the name was Age of Wonders maybe? If that was the right name, I wasted a good chunk of 3 or 4 months playing that game. (I tended to get the name of the game mixed up with a rts game that came out at the same time)

Also, I was pretty fond of Heroes of Might and Magic 1 and 2. I have 3 and 4 sitting around somewhere, but haven't played them yet.

Of course, these are older games, so ymmv.

Also check out Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a 3D space strategy game and can be a blast. It generally got rave reviews and should be fairly cheap by now.

well how hard core of a strategy gamer is he? sins isn't really for casual gamers. that's why i thought tropico 3 was a good recommendation as anyone can easily learn to play it.

He loves Civ 4. Other than that, I don't know. I went with Sins - hopefully he'll like it.
