Long flights: business class or better, A/C powered seats with wifi, beer on demand, about 10 or so magazines, some movies ready, and hopefully a hot passenger next to me or at least one that can communicate.

I purposefully keep myself up the night before so I sleep on the airplane and get better acclimated to the new time zone. I also bring a computer game that takes forever to complete. Something like Civilization or some RPG that takes days to complete. This was my strategy on a flight from the states to Singapore.

I couldn't sleep on a plane. I snore and have sleep apnea and it would be very disruptive to others on the plane.

Qatar has TVs for the long flights for each seat. Just watch two movies and then go to sleep. Though their food service is likely to wake you up at 4AM for breakfast.

Go to the bathroom, take off your shoes, and make little fists with your toes. It really works.

KUL is SEA's largest airport, as far as I know. Perhaps, you should leave America once in awhile.

Uh no KUL is NOT SEA's largest airport given that SEA is the IATA code for Seattle International Airport making SEA SEA's largest airport. It was a joke about combining IATA codes with common abbreviations which is well known to cause issues when routing through phone agents. But way to take it to a dick level. Perhaps you should visit the Pacific Northwest once in a while

I don't think it was a joke. You didn't get the SEA context until after it was explained.

 Right - not like I posted various emoticons implying it was a joke or anything.

But you can think what you want just like I think you had no idea SEA is the IATA code for Sea-Tac

Valium makes me wonky, but not so much sleepy. A couple Benadryl does a bang up job of putting me on my ass.

Last trip to Europe, I stayed up pushed through the night and took a Benadryl as soon as we boarded. I slept the entire flight. That's only a 12ish hour flight though. I guess the rest of the time I'd read, listen to music, watch a movie, etc...

I enjoy flying and the few times I had the oportunity were fun. Though it was only a few hours at most. Toronto to Thunder Bay was close to 2 hours if that. 45 minutes to get to Toronto from here. Crazy when you consider that it takes 8 hours to drive from here.

Can't imagine doing 19 though. Leg room on airplanes kind of sucks. :p Or is this one of those super huge jumbo jets like on the movie Snakes on a Plane, where you can walk around and stuff?

Do you have to be at the airport early, like 5am or something crazy like that? If yes, just stay up, that way you'll be tired on the flight and be more likely to snooze a bit.

I've been on a 12h train ride to Toronto and that's what I did, went by fast. Trains have better leg room though.

I can't sleep on planes. My life basically sucks on long flights.
Same here! When the plane hits turbulence I'm afraid it's going to crash. Who can sleep when the plane is shaking violently? Not I!

I'm flying the Wednesday from Phil to Qatar. Then from Qatar to Thailand. In total I'm looking at 19hrs in the air with a 2hr 15 min layover.

What strategy would you normally employ on such a long trip? Would you pop a few valiums? Drink a few beers? Should I stay up the night before and forgo sleep? Bring plenty of ebooks to read? Video games?

Also, what would you say to someone who is a nervous flyer? I have a difficult time sleeping on the airplane because I'm normally nervous. :hmm:

I racked up over 3 wks in the air during my adventure days, back in my 20s etc, I used to just get drunk and fall asleep!

I kind of like turbulence, it adds a bit of excitement to the ride. :p

You know it's going to be a good one when the seatbelt signs light up.
