Strangest Windows 2000 problem I've ever seen... Any help?

When I log in to this Windows 2000 Pro machine, it starts loading my settings, then it says "Saving your settings" and it logs me off, right back to the login screen... WTF??? I have never seen this before.

I try running in safe mode and it does the same thing. Has anyone seen this? Maybe it's a virus?

i had this problem with xp a couple months ago

i couldnt find a fix for it and had to reinstall. formatting wasnt necessary, just like a repair install

kinda sucked...be interested if you happen to find another way around it though

On XP this usually happens when the 'Cryptographic Service' is disabled (or messed up). Xp will not let you run xp from 'your' account but kicks you back to to a default account (but saves your settings first). Check in 'services.msc' that the Crypto service is running (before doing anything else!).

I presume W2k is the same.

Some of this summers round of virii messed up some users 'Crypto' services.

Also it could be a rights problem on your profile, there should be something in the eventviewer about what's happening.

Ya, I'll have to look at the event viewer through the network considering I can't log on locally.

Then I guess I'll run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what to do once I'm in it...
