Strange windows XP issue

so i have the comp that is acting really strange, got XP on it and such, however every time i try and go to the windows update site IE just crashes, it trys to load teh page and just freezes there, have to force quit IE

it works fine on every other web page and whatnot, i downloaded SP 1 and installed it

still IE has the same issues, automatic pdates also dont seem to be working

im DLing SP 2 but looking doubtfull that that will fix it

anyone have any idea whats up? reformatting is teh easy answer but im lazy and woudl not want to do that if i dont have to
 
Sounds like it may be infected with spyware. Had a unit in the shop with a similar problem; ended up being an issue with spyware that was not cleaned yet.
 
yea i thought that also, ran adaware and spybot, as well as a virus scanner ( AVG) no virii, few spyware things but still inst workin
