Ok, here's the story. The other night I went to do an install of WinXP Home edition on an friend's computer. This was a clean install, not an upgrade. This computer was hooked to a router for DSL with one other machine on it. That machine was running Windows 2000. They were in a simple workgroup together originally, no special or unusual setup. The install went fine, but when it finished and booted the the login screen, I could not login as any user. I got an error message saying that the "specified domain is not available or does not exist, please contact your system administrator." Does anyone know what is causing this? Obviously XP detected the network, but why would it look for a non-existent domain? As far as I know the other machine wasn't using a domain or active directory. I had to unhook the XP machine from the LAN, do the install over, then hook it back up. It worked fine then, but I wasted alot of time. Anybody know what was going on?
