Strange Windows 7 Problem: Short?

OK. I have come across a VERY strange problem in Windows 7 RC1 build 7100 and 7232.

With my following setup, I am experiencing a weird "short" type of problem. The problem is when I am fully booted in, the front USB connections on the case kind of "short out" when I connect any type of usb device (even if I just touch the metal with a usb device). Basically the screens go blank but the computer stays on, I have to hold the power button down to turn it off and then back on. I was thinking this was some sort of power short either with the motherboard or the PSU.

So, I installed Windows Vista Ultimate. The front USB worked just fine.

So I tried Windows XP. Same thing, it works just fine.

So I tried installing Windows 7 RC1 build 7232. The USB short happened again.

I then tried Windows 7 RC1 build 7100....and the same short problem.

Can drivers cause a short? Can an OS cause a short?

My build:

* Cooler Master Elite 330
* Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P motherboard
* AMD Phenom II Quad 940 Black Editon - Stock cooling
* 8GB G-Skill PC2-6400
* XFX Radeon 4870 1GB
* Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA II
* Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATAII
* Onboard LAN/HD Audio
* Logitech DiNovo Keyboard
* Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
* 2 X Yate Loon 120mm silent case fans
* 2 X Dell" S2309 W @ 1900 x 1080

Are you doing any overclocking? Is it always the same USB device that causes the issue?

I had a strange issue with USB on my Rampage Formula board. It behaved very similarly to what you described, so I suspected it was due to my overclock. I finally noticed that an external hard drive seemed to be causing an issue during the USB initialization phase and once I powered that off, everything seems to be fine.

I don't think it is a driver, but if you are doing some overclocking, it might be introducing an instability that might be causing an issue with Windows 7.

I have a similiar problem on my laptop that I just did a clean install of Windows 7 on. Basically, the wireless mouse, connected through a USB dongle, stops responding on occasion. I can resort to the touch bad and after a few seconds the mouse will come back online. It's as if Windows 7 has a lag with USB or an interrupt issue. This was never a problem with either Vista 64 or the RC of 7.

I have also that similar problem on my laptop with WIN 7 RC 7100 64-bit.
I use an USB keyboard and mouse connected via a hub to my laptop. Both stop responding for a short time. Most annoying of the bug is when you pressed a key before this bug occur, windows detect your keypress as a long keypress. So your keypress will be detected up to 15x times. Not so handy while typing a document.

I have no problem when I am using the trackpad or the on-board keyboard.
And this problem does not occur when I play a game like Unrealtournament or Quake 3.
Very strange and annoying.

I think it is a moot issue unless the same problem exists in Win 7 RTM. There were major changes made in RTM. RC is sort of irrelevant at this point.

In RTM, all my front USB ports work, and a 7-port powered hub on a rear port is handling 6 devices. No problems noted.

Can drivers cause a short? Can an OS cause a short?

It is obvious that you do not know what a short (short circuit ) is. :shocked:

The answer to your question quoted above is a definitive NO. Neither of these can cause a short. If it was a short it would be there regardless of any OS or driver.

Definition of Short Circuit:

A low-resistance connection established by accident or intention between two points in an electric circuit. The current tends to flow through the area of low resistance, bypassing the rest of the circuit.

That is because your subject was non-specific and we had to open it to realize that we had no idea what your issue was. "What is a 'short' problem"....
