I recently purchased dell 1600SC / Xeon 2.4 Hyper on with single processor with
built in intel giga bit network adapter.

Whatever I tried I get very slow response when I execute DIR
command on networked directory in command prompt.

It looks like every page is drawn then it paused fraction of second
and contine to display.

I thought it would be full/half duplex or packet collision related but
using FTP to test speed.. I get full 100m speed for up/down load test.
Opening folder in explorer do not seems slow.. it only happens in
command prompt and when I execute dir command.

I tried other network card and same result. Fresh windows 2003 standard
is installed in workgroup mode.

Anyone got clue ?

Found more weird thing.

One 2003 standard running on barton 2500+ 100m nic I'll call it barton.
One 2003 standrad running on xeon 2.4 gigbit nic and I'll call it xeon.

Both machine hooked to linksys router. Accessing network directory from XP SP1 client.
I used to type dir just make sure network connection is fine but when I found dir showing
looks slow from xeon server my trouble started after fresh 2003 installed.

After playing little bit more today, I found surprise result when I'm running vmware win95 virtual machine on same XP computer.
Connecting to xeon server from vmware win95... everything looks fine... dir command showing file list as fast as
local.. it just happen on connection1 from real xp sp1 and only happen when I connect to xeon server.
When I access barton network directory.. it works perfectly.

What can you guess if there's trouble only if you use XP Sp1 with XEON server ?
