Strange Win98SE network & driver issue.

I was trying to ditch NETBIOS over TCP/IP (you know, unbind TCP/IP from everything and reboot and finally it's disabled?) ... but I guess I removed all bindings and Client for MS Networks poofed. No biggy, I'll re-add it...Process as usual, except when I double click on Client for MS Networks (the final step to adding it) ... it doesn't add it. it just closes the selection window, and leaves me with the "Select Component Type" dialog box(client / adapter / protocol / service) which stays in the background of the "Select Network Client" window while it's open. Normally, after I select Client for MS Networks (or a protocol or anything) and hit OK, or just double click the item... the window closes, there's a pause while the "Select Component Type" window is still up, it goes away, and the protocol/whatever gets added. Not true anymore, nothing happens. I've rebooted many times, closed all apps/etc... nothing changes this.

So I figure, ok maybe if I remove everything from my "Network" config, reboot, and re-add it all. That just left me with even less, since it still wouldn't let me re-add anything. On top of that, it had to re-detect the NIC (Linksys LNE100TX) and the add driver dialog boxes act exactly how the add network components boxes do! Whenever I click OK on the final step (with my driver/whatever selection) ...it's like I'm hitting cancel. It goes back to the beginning (in the case of drivers, it's the "Update Device Driver Wizard" ... let windows find the best driver or select from list). This is the same "back-stepping" or OK-button acting like CANCEL as the control panel/network thing.

Instinct says: format. But it's a family box, with business files that cannot be lost. My primary means of backup is over the network. I have a new copy of Windows XP Pro to put on there... I'd hate to do an 'upgrade' because I know how bad those can turn out...but does it have a chance of getting it out of this rut since the plan is to upgrade this box to XP anyway?

Any clues? This one has me baffled. Could it be some kind of registry issue? Is windows networking totally gone? What should I check/try/do?

Thanks in advance,

oh, one more note. The only recent change to the computer had been trying to install a new (USB) printer... but seeing 98's poor support , I decided to uninstall and go with parallel port.

Upgrade from W98 to XP is not so bad, since XP actually erases 99% of Win98. The network software is almost totally fresh. The main software components that stay from Win98 are the Non MS Program files, and their Registry entries. Some programs have to be reinstalled to get other files from the original installation source (e.g. Mother Board Monitor).

After the installation you can leave the interface looking like Win98 until the rest of the family get used to the new OS, and switch to XP.

Putting a side all the usual b***ing, and complaining, the interface of XP is more pleasing, and Clear Type is much better to use to avoid eye strain.

In any case it takes about 45min. if it does not work you can always reformat.

ah, thanks man. I guess I will just go ahead and upgrade it. I already intended to switch the interface to looking like 98 so they could get used to it. I've been running XP on my box for 5 months and that was the first thing I did...

it's such a messed up problem, wonder if there even is another solution...

Win98 mess can be created by variety of troubles.

Could be that you have a? Ghost? network installation. Take out the NIC, reboot, delete the entire network setting, look at the Control Panel, System Properties, and delete any Network hardware. Switch off reinstall the NIC, and the rest of the Network.

If it does not work, you there may be missing, or a corrupted network related files. Reinstall Win98 from the original CD on top of the current installation. The CD will refresh the entire system file, and will leave the current setting intact.

first solution worked. After minor issues and swapping the PCI slot after I removed/reseated it... windows detected it and let me install it...network protocols are adding fine. now to back it up, and cleanse the system of 98

thanks again :)
