Strange - win explorer/media player shutdowns

I have a fair amount of XVID/Divx files. Browsing to any folder with these files causes Win explorer to shut down, then it comes right back of course. Same thing happens when I use Media player to play these files.

I THINK this problem has existed since I got my 6800 GT. I was using a sad old Radeon before the GT came, but never any problems like this.

At first I thought I had corrupt/conflicting codecs, so I uninstalled them. Using VLC now and files play fine...but this problem is very annoying. I really don't want to reinstall windows for this.

Specs:

Win XP pro SP2
A64 3500+
Asus A8v
1 GB Corsair XMS
200 GB Maxtor x 2 RAID 0
Gainward 6800GT
Audigy Platinum

Thoughts?

I recall there being an issue with DiVX not playing by the rules of SP2's Data Execution Prevention. You could try turning DEP off temporarily and see if that puts a stop to the problem. Are you familiar with how to turn DEP on and off in WinXP?

Yes, forgot to mention that I have turned off DEP for both programs. No improvement.

For both programs, meaning DiVX and XVID? Or Explorer and Windows Media Player? Have you tried disabling it completely?

I disabled DEP for explorer and MP. No change. THEN I uninstalled the codecs. VLC uses its own codecs? - not sure how this works, but that is what I was led to believe. I then upgraded to MP 10, it searches for the codec and the file will not play. I have not attempted to reinstall the codecs - yet.

Not sure if I know how to completely disable DEP, so no, I haven't yet done that.

Now that I look at the DEP panel, I guess I don't know how, either

Link to fix this would be great. My media machine, which has fresh install and sp2, acts up when viewing divx files.

I'm going to poke around the Divx and Doom9 forums, I'll let you know if I find anything helpful.
