Strange Win 98 play control problem...

Whenever I play a song, the values in my play control panel reset to some default. This would not be a problem except for the fact that the Wave/DirectSd value's default is zero. (It wasn't always zero. It spontaneously changed a couple days ago for no reason.) So, if I want to hear my music, I have to re-open play control and fiddle with the volume every song.

How can I change the default values?
