Strange Wallpaper Issue

When i have a wallpaper selected for my background, (just the typical ones that i have used in the past with no prob) i get a 10-15 second hesitation on startup. Also, after the hesitation, when i close windows, they appear to disappear more slowly than they used to; sort of a scrolling disappear, like my video card is wuss. This problem is gone if i choose none for wallpaper. However, when i have none for wallpaper and shutdown, i see the previously selected wallpaper just before it powers down on exit. My concern is that somehow i am ending up with 2 wallpapers selected. Has anyone seen an issue like this?

My system:

BH6 w/Cel2@850
128 MB PC100
Radeon 32M DDR (56 drivers)
PCI 128 SoundBlaster
Win98SE
13 gig WD HD

Any assistance would be appreciated! 8)

could it have something to do with active desktop?

how big are the image files? could it be that it is taking up too much ram? the hesitations could be caused by the reloading of the image file from the swap file...

as a matter of fact, i was messing with my virtual memory setting right before this thing happened...the pics are the same ones that i have used for some time before the problem. I am also suspicious of the swap file...how can i make sure that there is no issue with it? Would it help to disable and defrag? then reenable?

Any help is appreciated!!!
