I have my desktop and notebook plugged into a hub and the cable plugged into uplink. My computers cannot see each other on the network at the same time. The only one that can browse the network is the one that has internet access. Basically, the first computer that gets turned on gets internet access and the other doesn't. Any ideas?

Also, on the desktop, for some reason I cannot open any webpages, but I can send and receive messages on ICQ.

No surprise here, your ISP only gives you one IP address, so the other machine is sitting with an address of 169.254.x.x and no connection.

You need a broadband router, all these problems will be history. :)

I know that I only get one IP. I don't want both machines on the internet. What I want is to be able to transfer files between the two of them whenever I want. Maybe I should assign the other machine an IP address? Perhaps because the one that gets on the internet gets on assigned, so it's able to access the network?

Flexibility is the name of the game.

Spend big money ($10-$20), and buy a Cable/DSL Router. ;)

Connect and build a nice LAN make sure that every thing is working including Internet to all of the computers (just in case one of these days you are going get ?crazy? and change your mind). :light:

Now the clincher. :D

Install NetBEUI on all computers and make it default LAN protocol.

Unbind TCP/IP from the NIC and File Sharing on any of the computers that you want to be Internetless. :sun:

Link: Set NetBEUI as the Default Sharing Protocol in WinXP.

Haha. I installed NetBEUI and that allowed me to share files one way. I don't feel like getting a router because if I do, I'd want to go wireless because of my notebook. And I don't really have the money to buy all the stuff I need for that.

Yeah, I dig, I walk every day to work (5Miles).

I do not feel like buying a car since if I already buying a Car I would like to Buy a Lamborghini, and I can not effort to buy a car for $150.000. :Q:brokenheart:

Here a nice Router for $15.95 (after Rebate).

Cable/DSL Web Safe Router with 4 Port 10/100 Switch.

Ah, but you don't need to buy a Lambo, you can get a Yugo instead and save yourself having to walk the full 5 miles and maybe just have to walk 2 or so miles to work. :D

I suppose that's a price that can't be beat. I hope you're satisfied now that you've browbeaten me into spending some more of my hard earned money. :)
