strange time change on workstation

I had a user point out to me today at work that their workstation had the correct system time displayed most all of the morning and then when she came back to her laptop after leaving for a few minutes that the system time was now displaying an hour and a few minutes prior to the correct time.

I looked at it and told her that she should contact our IT department about it, which she did.

But then after leaving her desk again for a few minutes when she comes back now the system time has jumped back forward to the correct time.

And the IT department called us back and told us that they had not done anything to the machine remotely and they did not seem to know what the problem might be. Said they would check into it and get back to us.

Now I know that if the system time was off and it connected to a time server that that might make a correction to the time but I don't know why it would make it jump off of the correct time back an hour plus a few minutes and then later jump forward back to the correct time unless possibly there was a problem with the time server.

Has anyone seen or heard of a similar problem ?

Thanks.

Where I work we have to install an Oracle lite database with a version of JRE. During install the time will jump forward and back an hour a couple of times. Once installed, however, it works fine.

Was the user installing anything? Is she doing certain tasks when this happens? Does it occur on a regular basis (I.e. is there any pattern to the changes?) I'd check for malware also.

sort of. i have Automatic Updates turned off on my XP64 system. it did the daylight savings time change 1 week early.

i wonder if time change things like this are related to Windows Update on your friend's system.
