Strange things happening with sound in Leopard

Recently some rather strange things have been occurring as regards sound playback when I am using Leopard on my 1.83 Core Duo MacBook.

It will be working flawlessly, and then it will cut out silence with short bursts of sound, which speed up in frequency until whatever sound I was playing comes back to playing normally. For example:

Link to MP3 (~100k)

At first it occurred when I was using Logic Pro 8, but now it will happen sometimes when just playing music back through iTunes. It happens relatively rarely, maybe once every half an hour or so playing iTunes, more frequently when working with Logic.

Of importance is that I'm using a Tascam US-122 USB audio interface. I have only ever noticed it when this is in use, and suspect this may be the cause. I am yet to test to see if it happens when using onboard audio, will be doing that shortly.

Of interest, the 'strange noises' here were recorded using WireTap set to record 'Mac Audio' - i.e. all system sound (you can also set it up to record specific programs etc). As it captured the strange sounds, it confirms that the problem is not somewhere between my interface and my speakers, and reduces the likelihood of a hardware failure on the interface in my opinion.

The interface is not officially supported for Leopard but has been working flawlessly for months and has the latest drivers installed.

Does anyone have any idea what to do to troubleshoot this problem? Half the pain is that it occurs relatively rarely and then rectifies itself rapidly making it difficult to play around to find a cure.

I'll be posting about this on the Audio section of Mac Forums also probably, but thought I would try here first.

Many thanks in advance for any input you can offer.

I'd like to think you'd disclose this stuff, but I'm asking just to be sure... never spilled a drink or it, never dropped it, never tried to mod it or anything?

I think your first course of action should be to try without the USB audio, although that will determine a lot less than we think. (If it still happens, it will ONLY determine that it's not a problem with the USB audio device.)

I don't THINK it would matter, but are any other (power) cords running over the USB cord? Are there any other USB devices you have hooked up? My BEST guess is that it's a power or overheating issue. Seeing as you are using a laptop, it's possible that the power consumption or processing power is VERY high considering what the system is capable of... which would explain why it happens a lot more often when you are using a high-end audio program.

I would say try plugging in a few more devices and see if it happens more frequently or gets worse, but I don't like the idea of advising overloading your computer.

Well... funny you should say that...

It had a nasty drop about 15 months ago, I even posted about it on here - thread (with pic of damage). However I doubt that as a cause as the problems only developed recently.

Secondly, well, a couple of months ago it got rained on. The lid was closed though, but clearly some water got in as at first it wouldn't switch on, but then it dried out and would. It's now fine, except the battery logo in the top right of the screen has an X in it - looks like (x(). But again that was a significant period of time before the problems had first manifested. Nonetheless, it may be a factor.

I will run audio off the internal audio for a few days see if the problem ever ocurs, then have a go and running a load of USB devices off it and see if that makes it worse. Sounds like a sensible plan. I might also see if I can borow a friends interface to see how that goes.

Thanks for the advice so far

Well, 10.5.3 came out today, and one of the fixes is listed as:

"Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices"

Fingers crossed! :D
