Strange TF2 issue

I've just started having an issue within TF2...on servers that used to work just fine, I'm getting very jumpy animations. It manifests just like a lag issue, but my latency and the server latency are both under 50ms, so I can't really understand it being that. I've disabled Vista's firewall at the service level, and now it seems that the only way to play a smooth match is to find a server with a 20-30ms response time. I used to be able to play at 100ms+ servers with no issues. Any thoughts?

On Vista x64 with the 169.09 drivers, 4gb of ram.

Is it a game wide issue? Like, every server? Some servers have a net setting set lower to reduce latency which will result in really choppy animations.

Nope, not every server is like it. Like I said though, some servers that used to be fine are now unplayable.

Well they could have changed the setting. If they so desired.

Maybe you are getting some packet loss? That can cause things to be jumpy even if you have low latency.

Double check your rates. Some servers may automatically reset your config with lower rates to reduce lag on the server, but this can result in some poor net performance. I have experienced what you are talking about, but it seemed to be related to servers with low tickrates more than anything else. I certainly don't have it on all servers, which suggests that there's a problem on your end. Maybe your ISP is throttling you for using too much bandwidth?

not sure i experience the OP's problem but i played last night for the first time in awhile and i noticed like ghost images of characters.

at first i thought it was maybe a spy cloaking or uncloaking but there wasn't anyone there.

I had some issues today. Lag was quite a factor.....I never experienced it on the servers till today. Also, for some reason, everyone around shows up as a red scout with different weapons. I attributed it to using a modded ATI driver for the mobility x600 se.... I reinstalled teh old drivers back, but I have not tried it yet.

i get that sometimes, but its usually server specific so i d/c and find a new server. does it start doing that mid game or just sometimes when you connect to a server? if its the latter then it might be a crappy server that you just lucked out the first time you joined
