Strange (?) temp results with Hyper 212 LED on i3-6100

Hi guys!

I recently installed a CM Hyper 212 LED on an i3-6100, and saw idle temps hovering around 39-40 C, which I thought was fairly high compared to similar setups online. The ambient temp is less than 25 C.

However, after running Prime95 (v26.6) for more than half an hour, neither core temp exceeded 50C, which seems to be very low.

Anyone know what's going on? I was going to reseat the cooler with a fresh application of TIM but based on the load temps I feel pretty confident I can just leave it alone.

Idle seems a little high. I use the Noctua NH-U12S with a 6700k, and I idle around 23c. The load temps seem good though like you said.

Maybe you used too much/too little paste or something. I guess after you reseat it you can know for sure.

BTW, where are you getting those temps from? Sometimes the programs can be off on their readings. I like to use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to see my temp ranges, and it has always seemed pretty accurate.

Perhaps the TIM needed some good heat up and cool down cycles to get settled.

Did you set the power options to "Balanced"? that way the CPU will reduce clockspeed when idle and be cooler. If you set it to "Power" the clockspeed will stay high and be hotter.
Did you check if some processes steal power? Is CPU near 1%? sometimes browsers with many tabs open and some weird websites can take a lot of power when doing nothing (like memory leaks, but for CPU)
