Strange temp problem after remounting HSF

I had my 3000 venice at 1.65 volts, which allowed me to get 2400mhz stable (270x9). My temps were 46 degrees maximum. I switched to water cooling and got (with very poor radiator ventilation) 42 degees max. I decided I didn't want water cooling any more and switched back to my heatsink from before, a zalman 7700alcu. My temps with the same settings now are 58 degrees max! Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this happened?

I don't think it is. I forgot to mention that I tried remounting the heatsink and reapplying thermal paste.

Did you properly clean the processor and HSF to get rid of the old paste? Having the old paste still embedded in the processor or HSF can create a bad thermal contact. The paste is meant to fill the microscopic pores of the heatspreader and HSF, but any old paste would already fill those holes, making proper contact poorer.

Make sure you clean the two with 90-100% isopropyl alcohol or a specialized cleaning solution before reapplying paste.

You do realize that the TIM will settle, and temps can drop several degrees >6C; more if the contact isn't decent. Let it sit.

I already did that unfortunately.

Hopefully that's it. How long does Arctic Silver take to settle?

silver takes about 2 weeks if you power down properly. Run the computer in the daytime but turn it off at night.
