If you have a garage, you might be able to just press the brakes while the car is inside, with the door closed. At least in mine, I can see the light reflecting off the door from the brake lights. Can't see it very well, but you can tell if one side is brighter than the other, meaning one is out.
edit: this doesn't work if ALL of your brake lights are out, like this one car I saw... 🙂 or maybe it does, if you pay attention to whether the reflected light never changes brightness when you tap the brakes, but not sure on this
2 filaments hm yea i seem to remember them having two. two brightnesses? guess i'll check again with the bulb hanging out
oh the easy way i check lights by myself is to jam something between the seat bottom and brake pedal. length of scrap wood or a box, then just move that seat up until it jams the pedal down.😛
One issue older camry's had was the taillight housing melting near the bulbs. This would cause some of the ground wires (which are held into the plastic housing by a screw) to become loose. When this would happen lighting issues would follow.
My guess is you have a bulb issue, but if that isn't it pull the housing and inspect them for loose components/wires.
