strange sound problem : Soyo Dragon, Creative 5.1 speakers, on board audio

Here is how the connections goes...

I have the latest drivers for the built in sound and I have it set to use the SPDIF out. In my case we are using the optical out to the optical in in the digital receiver that comes with the CL DTS3500. We were watching a DVD using the ATI AIW Radeon. During the movie you could notice the volume seem to cut out. The sound wouldn't dissappear but it would get quieter and you don't always notice it.

Any clues as to why this would happen?
