Strange sound problem on this computer

Hello all,

I formatted my friend's hard drive and reinstalled 98 SE.

Everything is running ok, except the sound.

SHe's using the onboard SB-compatible sound card on a Gigabyte GA-7ZXE.

It worked before formatting and not now.

According to System Properties in the Control Panel, everything is in working order. Wav files play, there are no errors telling me no sound device is present.

I run winamp and everything shows that mp3's are playing (visualizations work, the progress bar is moving), but no sound from the speakers.

I tried using headphones with the same effect.

Could it be perhaps the speaker-in jack on the sound card is wigging out?

Thanks
