Strange Sleep / resume behaviour (790GX)

Mobo is GigaByte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H, Win 7 HP 32 bit.

I can put it to sleep no problem.
However, when resuming, it just halts at blank screen with mouse cursor visible (and sometimes even responsive)
Turning off and back on results in "Windows resuming" 50% of the time, the other 50% is "windows was incorrectly shut down" and options on how to start windows (normal, safe mode)

I have the power management set to S3(STR) in BIOS as opposed to S1(POS). I can't find any other relevant setting for this.

How can I make it work right?
