This was what happened to me this weekend.
I had a Swiftech MCX462 HSF and I bought a SLK900U (which, by the way, is incredible) and to mount the new cooler I had to remove the mobo from the case (a Chieftec Aluminium). Anyway, everything went smooth until I decide to close the case (with the PC running and cheched that everything was running ok). So I was in Windows and when closing the case the side of the case touches the HD racks and the computer automatically shuts down. It almost seemed that the HSF wasn't touching the CPU correctly and that the thermal protection was activated.
I tried to put it on but it was a no go. I had to unplug all the cables from the power jack on the wall for 5 seconds, plug it again and then it restarted.
My first thought was that there was something wrong with the CPU install, but no, everything was ok.
Then when I was closing the side casing I touched again on the HD rack and the same thing happened. I did my math (1+1=2 🙂) and saw a pattern. I did it 2 more times and the exact same thing happened.
So, the problem is found. Now I only need to know how to solve it. Something definitly is wrong with the mobo install.
My question is, what is the most probable cause for this? One of the screws that attach the mobo to the case might be without a washer to isolate? The back of the heatsink is making contact with some stange part of the mobo? (this one doesn't seem very likely because the HSF has a plastic and rubber-pad protection on the back of the mobo) Maybe a wire is making contact with the case? (not very likelly).
Tell me what you thing it might be.
Thanks!.
