Strange shut downs

ok - so here it is

every now and then I get unusual shutdowns - I come home from work and my PC is shut down

Its happened a few time while I was home and it confuses me to no end

i test my system every which way for stability - pass numerous hours of Prime, Orthos, Memtest but this "feels" far different

Its not random reboots, as the system fully just turns off - and windows strangely doesn't act like something bad happened nor does my bios freak cause it wouldn't post boot for a setting being jacked up

I'm starting to think it might be my UPS - I'm just running a little 350va APC UPS plugged into a decent APC surge protector

am I just fine running my setup via the surge protector alone??? - I had thought that all UPS units "cleaned" up the power but I know now that kinda isn't the case on lower end units

I don't know if I get major power fluctuations that cause it, having the UPS shut down power 🙁

I just really don't know - nothing "bad" has happened yet but its damned annoying, bothersome & concerning

replace the PSU with a known good one and see if it continues.

Same thing happened to me and I ended up with a dead cpu and a crippled MB. I could see at least 3 burn marks on the MB's power connector once I removed the PSU.

i know its not the PSU - it happened still on occasion with my previous Ultra 500w X-finity

I'll see about checking that out but there are no burn marks anywhere - I had to change some stuff around last week and all looks well

any ideas on how to test for a bad UPS?

Of course we are assuming there is no OS issue causing this.

It could be a bad MB or a faulty cpu or possibly the ram.

i'd be open to all suggestions but with my current hardware (in sig) with the current settings I can fully stress my system for 24 hours and not crash but at some random time during the week (if that often, its truly random) my system just powers down

most of the item you've listed IIRC (and IMO) cause reboots - and I'd experienced those a long time ago when looking for stable OC's and when I'd had memory issues

I really wish I was home to see it happen and see if my monitor loses power at those times too so I'd know it was the UPS or some other power related issue

I know i'm new to the forum and this is my first post but... If I were in your shoes and given the situation you have described:
I would take the ups out of the picture. Just plug in the pc direct to the receptacle. Then if problem goes away you have it...

can't argue with that.

-what model of ups, because most of the apc 350 only are rated @210 watts way too small
you might want to check it's web site and not use it,

-a 700va would be min. even then it could pushing it.to have any run time and a Smart APC will shut it's self off, if it runs in RuntimeTime Alarm too long.

-why your having problems now is that the batteries could be cooked and it dose not have the guts to charge the dead batteries and run your system.

-just plug the computor into the wall and check into the size of the that UPS
