Strange result when installing Intel sound driver

Well, goodnight everyone... or at least at this moment, today my problem consist in a strange way of rejecting drivers...
the computer, form a friend of mine is an Intel P4 2.4Ghz C
the motherboerd id an Intel, but honestly i'm not sure what model, suppose it's a 845 chipset based one.
OK, my friend, who is a stupid noob has deleted the sound driver "accidentaly" so... I as a favour decided to look for one, as his computer is not connected to internet i guess which motherboard it has... i'm afrid i was wrong, because the driver downloaded from Intel webpage and being 18.5 mega big was installed normally, then it promopted for a reboot, the computer was rebooted, and inmediatly after that in the booting a message saying "Wrong system disk, replace and press any key when ready" flash in the screen.
This really surprise me... i wasn't expecting any more than a still noiseless computers... and it seems that the HD is now loger being recognized. I've not open the computer yet, because he told me the problem by phone i haven't had any opportunity for going to his home. Maybe before i reach the place some of you can suggest some interesting considerations... i suppose that the HD being disconnected at that exact moment is a little bit impossible...
well i hear suggestions and thank all of you in advance

Installing the wrong sound driver won't make the hard drive no longer be recognized. Is it possible he stuck a floppy disk in the floppy drive and forgot to take it out?
