Strange problems after cleaning Nimda Virus

Well, a member of my family recently downloaded some email and got my desktop infected with the nimda virus. There were over 2000 infected files on my HD and 1.6gigs worth when I finally cleaned everything up. However, many of my exe files, such as several of my programs' setup files, have sort of been corrupted. Basically what has happened is the computer now thinks they are Microsoft Office Components. I have reformatted the computer and done several other things since the infection, but if there's a way to change these exe files back to normal I would really appreciate any help on the matter.

You reformatted your hard drive and the virus is still there?

That seems odd.

I got infected with the virus a couple of months ago (my backup machine just got infected last week). After I wiped the hard drive, the virus was gone.

One thing I noticed was that AVG - a free antivirus program seemed to work a little better than McAfee (I got their trial - didn't like it heard about AVG in these forums). You can get it at AVG (www.grisoft.com in case the link doesn't work).

Whenever I run the scan on my backup computer, it cleans most of the infected files but is unable to clean certain files - I'll have to wipe that hard drive as well. Did you possibly back up infected data when you formatted your hard drive? (I had no problems cleaning all of my data files and then backing them up - the files I couldn't erase were mostly in my temp directory for some reason.)

Good luck getting rid of the virus it's a real pain in the butt.

I think you misunderstood a little, perhaps I didn't make myself clear. The virus is gone, but it has left some of my exe files as Microsof Office Component files and thus I can't just run them. Does anyone know how to change them back to normal?
