strange problem

I'm pretty sure I narrowed it down to a cable problem.

heres the issue. the ide cable that came with my cdrw is too short to fit in a full tower case. I lowered it to the lowest part possible to fit both cdrw and dvdrw.

so I went a bought a new longer ide cable. system doesn't like it. went back got an ata100 cable that backwards compatible. system doesn't like it. I should be specific on the doesn't like it. xp sees the burners but I can run anything from the cdrw drive. If I connect using hte cable that came with the cdrw the cdrw will work. DVDRW drive works doesn't matter which cable I used.

now do I have really bad luck with bad cables, I'm totally buying the wrong cable or its something else.

I can make it fit my full tower(original cable) only with I can move the middle connector up a bit. is there any way I can do that?

cdrw is a Yamaha 2100ez. dvdrw - pioneer 104.

anyhelp will do.

Most optical drives use ATA66 cables. They're the ones with the wider ribbons. The ATA100 cables are thinner. Try getting the old ATA66 cables. Hope this helps.

So what is your problem, besides having terrible grammer issues?

The reason why your CD-RW might not work with your new cables is that the new cables are too long. IDE cables aren't supposed to be longer than 18in. That is the max recommended length. But, some users, including me, have no problems with cables twice that length. I guess it all depends on your system. To make sure that the cables are causing the problem, try getting new 18in cables.
