Strange problem with Win ME - can't save changes to autoexec.bat and config.sys...

Yesterday I installed Win ME after a complete format of my hd. after installing win me i found out that i can't save any changes done to autoexec.bat and config.sys files. i do some changes in them and save. but after rebooting i find that the changes are gone. the size of config the sys becomes 0 bytes and in autoexec.bat file, there are some default commands written and not what i wrote. the changes which i did are now in autoexec.bak and config.bak files.

i tried this a lot of times but this happens everytime.
why is this happening? how can i make the changes permanent?

I found the same thing happened to me the short time I used WinME.

For some reason, WinME takes whatever you manually enter into the config.sys/autoexec.bat and moves it into the registry. You can view it by going under Start => Run => type 'MSCONFIG' => and then look under the appropriate config.sys or autoexec.bat tabs. Whatever you put into the files should be here.

The wierd thing is I don't even think that ME runs any of these entries at startup. It just does use the config.sys or autoexec.bat.

I may be completely wrong on the above - it is based on my short experiences with ME. I went back to Win98SE after about 2 weeks.

WinME doesn't like it when the autoexec or config file is altered, it will just revert back to the default ones if there is a change. To prevent it from doing that, just hit this page and download the Real DOS mode patch. Once it is installed, you can customize the autoexec and config files to fit your needs.

Blue Weasel's almost correct. I'm not too sure if config.sys loads, but the only real stuff the WinME use autoexec.bat for is for the Environment Variables. If that's what you wanted to change, then in MSCONFIG, got to the Environment tab and then you can find the settings there.

I think anything more than that you have to hack WinME a bit (registry, etc.) to change the settings.
