I normally use my wireless connection for my laptop, but about a week ago I tried to plug directly from my Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop into my 8 port SMC Cable Router/Switch.. For some reason I cannot connect up at 100 mbits, but if I force the adapter to 10 megabits I can connect.

Some things I have tried, which make things even more confusing.. I have tried connecting the laptop to a different switch, it works fine at 100 megabits (Strangely, that switch is also SMC but a different model).. I have tried different cables, same results.. If I put a loopback plug into the laptop's ethernet port, it will sync to itself fine at 100 megabits...

But what is also weird is that the SMC router/switch will work fine with every other device I have at 100 megabits.. I would like to point the blame at someone here but I can't seem to find anything conclusive! The router seems fine because it works at 100 megabits with everything else, but the laptop seems fine because it ALSO works at 100 megabits with everything else.. They just won't talk together...

I also tried the latest drivers and firmware for both items.. no change..

I don't think its OS related however since I can see the router and laptop don't sync up before the OS loads..

Any ideas here? I am fresh out.. Fortunately my 802.11a connection works fine, so its not a big deal, but its annoying the hell out of me!!! :)
