Strange Problem with Primary/Secondary IDE Controllers

Recently, I added a Netgear NIC and removed an old WinModem from my computer. When I restarted I found that the computer didn't see any IDE devices and had put yellow exclamation marks after the primary and secondary IDE Controllers in the Device Manager. I tried to remove them to see if it would find them again; didnt work. I took out the Netgear NIC and all its drivers; didnt work. In Safe Mode, everything looks ok in the device manager. But once I go back to Normal Mode, I cant use any IDE device exceptthe HD. Any ideas other than a reinstallation of Windows.
thx...

Edit: I should mention that Im not completely sure if this problem came up before or after I installed the NIC. I haven't used the CDROM or ZIP for a short while, so something else could have happened, though the timing is awfully suspicious.

What lind of MB. In device manager -- what Irq's are used by which device. Can your Bios control which Irq is used by each slot? Some slots usually share an Irq with most newer MBs. Any IDE controller cards?
