Strange problem with HP Deskjet 656c

When asked to print the test page while installing the drivers from the cd, everything works ok. But when i try to print from windows (wordpad, word, even when going start-settings-printers-properties-print test page) nothing happens. The same while trying to print test page from hp toolbox. I have changed the usb cable and tried 2 operating systems. Win98SE and WinME. The same again. Any help except downloading the latest drivers?
