Strange problem with Dell 2005FPW LCD.

I've always heard LCD's can't burn in.

What I've got is streaking and smudging which can't be cleaned off. It can only be seen on certain colored backgrounds. For example, this can be seen on the blue Windows XP login screen. It can also be seen if I change my desktop color to that teal grean color in the options.

The smudges at the top edge of the screen look like someone spilled liquid on my screen or inside my screen. I've also got a blurry line that goes across the bottom of my screen exactly where the top of my task bar sits.

Cleaning the screen does not get rid of this so it must be inside the screen. Also, the fact that the line at the bottom fits my task bar perfectly.

Also, this morning I could see print in the screen.

Is anyone else having this problem? What can I do to troubleshoot this? What are my options if the screen is bad? I've had it for about three months.

Thanks,

LCDs don't "burn" the same way that CRT panels or plasma displays can (where the phosphors become physically damaged), but you can get a remanence effect in the LCD crystals if they are held in one state (especially the 'on' states, where the crystals are twisted) for extended periods of time.

*Usually* the effect is small, and not permanent, and will go away if you display something else for a while (or just turn the display off). If your monitor is doing it excessively (especially since it is only 3 months old), I would see if you can RMA it for a new one, since it could just be a flawed LCD panel.
